For those living below the poverty level, meat is the least available and most costly food item. Hunters for the Hungry is helping by providing high-protein, low-fat venison to our area’s food banks, soup kitchens, churches and other charities that provide food for the hungry.

Hunters for the Hungry takes deer donated by hunters, farmers, municipal and property management efforts and processes the venison for distribution. Processing costs average $30.00 per deer and each deer yields approximately 200 four-ounce servings. In 2002, we processed 266,456 pounds of deer meat. Since we began in 1991, we have provided 6.6 million servings of venison for those in need.
As a 501 (c) (3) charity we must raise funds to offset processing costs. The goal for the statewide program this year is to provide 275,000 pounds of meat. This volume of meat will provide 1.1 million servings. This year, the organization has two outstanding raffles to help raise much needed funding.

The first item to be raffled is an Arctic Cat ATV 250cc with a winch and trailer. The ATV and trailer are valued at $4,000.00 and raffle tickets will be sold at $10.00 per ticket. No more than 7,500 tickets will be sold. The Arctic Cat ATV is donated by the Arctic Cat Company and Lake Country Power Sport of Spotsylvania, Ken’s Cycle of Highland Springs, Power Products of Midlothian, Jones Auto of Madison, Rowland Equipment of Smithfield, and Power Products of Richmond. The trailer is donated by Manry-Rawls Insurance Company, Inc. of Franklin, Virginia. Raffle tickets are donated by Virginia Farm Bureau Service Corporation.

The second raffle offers a Hunt of a Lifetime – a five day/five night Muzzleload Hunt at Rocky Branch Plantation in Pine Mountain, Georgia. The winner will hunt with the Team Realtree cameras and either David Blanton or Michael Waddell, and the package includes meals, lodging and licenses for a one-buck hunt. The Hunt will take place between November 30 and December 5, 2003.

The value of the hunt is $3,500, the opportunity to hunt with Team Realtree is priceless! Raffle tickets are available at $30.00 each, and no more than 2500 will be sold. Director of the program Laura Newell-Furniss said “Your $30.00 donation will process an entire deer and make 50 pounds of meat available for people going through difficult times. You not only get the opportunity to win this fantastic hunt you will also be providing food for children, the elderly, and struggling families during these tough economic times. We certainly hope you can lend us a hand.”

The hunt has been donated by Rocky Branch Plantation, 630 Hopewell Church Road, Pine Mountain, GA 31822. For more information regarding hunting at Rocky Branch Plantation, go to their web site at www.RockyBranchPlantation.com.

The drawings for both raffles will be held during the Virginia Outdoor Sportsman Show on August 10, 2003 between 4:00 and 4:30 p.m. You need not be present to win. Those interested in obtaining raffle tickets should indicate which raffle they are entering, and enclose a check and a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Hunters for the Hungry, P.O. Box 304, Big Island, Virginia 24526. Raffle tickets will be sent in the return mail. Additional information about Hunters for the Hungry is available on our website at www.h4hungry.org.
