Plan your picnics now for the first in the Irvington Concert on the Commons Series on Saturday, June 7 at 6:30 p.m. The United States Air Force Langley Winds Quintet will appear for the second time at Irvington Commons with a free performance for the entire family. The series is sponsored by The Irvington Chamber of Commerce & Village Improvement Association (ICC/VIA). “We are excited to have the Langley Winds back in Irvington,” says Alison Drake, chair of ICC/VIA. “The unusual variety of this year’s program will definitely appeal to people of all ages and interests.” Special guest percussionist Chuck Lawyer joins wind musicians Beth Honaker, Ryan Heseltine, Cara Whetstone, John Fritz, and Claudia Weir for this performance. Irvington also welcomes vocalist Dinah Steward, who was featured at last year’s concert by the 61-member Air Force Band. She will sing a medley of Disney movie tunes, an operatic aria, and Beethoven’s “A Country Dance.” The quintet’s repertoire includes a wide variety of chamber works, as well as popular and patriotic pieces. Besides the traditional romantic style of woodwind music, this year’s concert includes a lively trio with marimba, flute, and bassoon. Major Larry H. Lang, Commander and Conductor of the USAF Heritage of America Band, directs the quintet. “Thanks to the generosity of Chesapeake Academy, we have a rain location,” says Alison Drake. In case of rain, the event will be moved to the gymnasium of Chesapeake Academy. It is requested that no food or drinks be brought into the gymnasium.
