Mathews Market Days
By Tina Nixon

Come enjoy food and fun at the 28th Annual Mathews Market Days Festival on Friday, September 6th & Saturday, September 7th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a Saturday Night Live Street Dance featuring music by Near Miss. This two day family event will entertain all ages and showcase the talent of our local community.

Also, help us commemorate the tragic events of September 11, 2001. At our welcoming ceremonies beginning at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, a special 9/11/01 Commemoration by American Legion Post 83 will include Raising of the Flag by Post Honor Guard, Flyover by the VA Ultra-Light Flyers, and much more. Ricky Tomlinson (Chief of Mathews Volunteer Fire Department) will begin the commemoration with a fire company service tradition dating back to the mid-1800s: “Sounding of the Five Fours” bell-ringing to honor fallen fire fighters. Remarks will follow by American Legion Post Commander Tommy Lewis. The Post 83 firing squad will then fire three volleys while Tom Robinson, U.S. Army, Virginia National Guard performs TAPS.

Mathews Market Days Food Festival should be a big hit this year. There are many categories in which you can enter: Jams and Preserves, Jellies, Marmalades, Conserves, Fruit Butters, Pickles & Condiments, Herbs or Herb Vinegars, Wines, Honey, Fruits, Fruit Sauces, Vegetables, Tomatoes, FOR MEN ONLY, FOR CHILDREN ONLY (17 & under) and miscellaneous. For rules and regulations please pick up your entry form at Bay School Cultural Arts Center, log onto www.visitmathews.com or call Carole Lewis at 725-7196. Deadline for entries are September 5, 2002 between 9 a.m. till Noon at Bay School Cultural Arts Center.

The Mathews Memorial Library will be participating in Mathews Market Days in many ways this year. A book sale will begin Friday morning and continue throughout the festival in the Orrell Annex (behind the main library). “A Voyage Through Time” Exhibit, located in the unfinished portion of the library will feature themes to enhance awareness of the richness and heritage that abounds in the county. A major feature will be a display of photographs from the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s Herman Hollerith, Jr. Collection. A raffle will be offered at $5.00 per ticket to be eligible for a Jimmy Skiff that was constructed at the Library’s July Youth Program. All proceeds will benefit completion of the youth wing.

Mathews County Land Conservancy and Mathews Market Days Committee challenges you to “get out your running/walking shoes” for the Mathews Market Days 5K & 10 K Run/2 Mile Fun Walk beginning Saturday morning, September 7th. Race Day Registration and Packet pickup begins at 8:00 a.m. at Williams Wharf Landing. All proceeds will benefit the Mathews County Land Conservancy to preserve and protect our county’s priceless natural resources. The race will begin and end at Williams Wharf Road (end of Route 614). For more information call Lynda Smith Greve at 725-9685.
