Farmers & Hunters Feeding the Hungry
By Chelly & Steve Scala

Deer hunting is being enjoyed by many across Maryland and Virginia and with it goes the potential benefit of enjoying tasty, healthful venison. A variety of delicious recipes use venison to the delight of both “veteran consumers” and those trying it for the first time. Because venison provides a healthy, nutritious and low fat source of protein, the less fortunate can also benefit from a hunter’s harvest. Maryland’s Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) has established a network of supporting businesses, meat processors, hunters, landowners and community outreach connections to provide venison meals to those in need. Hunters in Maryland can provide a donated deer to one of more then 26 participating meat processors who cut and wrap venison for distribution by area food banks, social services offices, churches and community outreach organizations. FHFH is looking for this list of participating meat processors to grow and welcomes any inquiries in that regard. Community, civic or church organizations who want to help by donating monetary contributions or distributing processed venison to those in need are also encouraged to contact FHFH. To reach Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry in Maryland, call 301-739-3000 or visit their website at; www.fhfh.org. Monetary donations can be mailed to, Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry, 216 North Cleveland Ave, Hagerstown, MD 21740.

The “Boss Hens” of the National Wild Turkey Federation’s (NWTF) Southern Maryland Chapter had another enjoyable weekend in Maryland’s late fall outdoors. Thanks to the many supporters who provided their time, efforts and donations, a group of women were able to experience and enjoy the Tidewater Region’s natural environment and wildlife. A special thanks goes out to “Redigo” and Lynne Saunders who provided their beautiful “At Last Farm” on the banks of the Patuxent River for this year’s event. The Southern Maryland Chapter of the NWTF will soon be planning a turkey calling contest for the early Spring and also their annual “superfund” banquet. For information on these events or inquiries about joining the NWTF or the Chapter’s Outdoors Women Program, call Susan Boarman at 301-259-2830 or Lynne Saunders at 301-274-0004
