By Chelly & Steve Scala Ignore the cold, windy weather that February sometimes brings, but don’t stop enjoying what the outdoors has to offer. Indoor shows which feature fishing, hunting, camping and other outdoor related activities are a popular pastime this month. They can provide fun for the whole family through the many different displays, activities, seminars and potential bargains from a host of tackle and equipment vendors. The ultimate cure for “cabin fever” is how we view outdoor shows. While you may go home with more gear then you had before attending, look forward to leaving with some motivation and ideas to get ready for early Spring fishing or gobbler season. A popular show which draws people from a large demographic area in both Virginia and Maryland is the annual “Chantilly Capital Sport Show.” Many know it by the “Chantilly Outdoor Show” which comes to the Capital Expo Center in Chantilly, Virginia not far off of Route 66. This year’s event is in it’s 7th year and takes place from February 15-17 and is cited by the Outdoor Sports Expo Group (OSEG) as being, “..the largest pure hunting and fishing show in the Mid-Atlantic.” Billed as “..two shows and hundreds of booths, exhibits, seminars and action areas in two large buildings”, the Chantilly Show can keep attendees interested for a whole day and into the evening. Some may even come back for a second day, while the show is going on. One of our daughter’s favorites, since she began attending at an early age, is the “Live Birds of Prey” display and presentation. Along with our nation’s winged heritage, the bald eagle, are many other species featuring small hawks, kestrels, owls and golden eagles. Those with an interest in fly fishing can expect to see fishing greats, Lefty Kregh, Bob Clouser, Harry Murray, King Montgomery, Harry Robertson and Fishy Fullum. These anglers will be sharing their expertise and guidance as part of the 4th annual Old Dominion Fly Fishing Show, which for the second year takes place within the Capital Sport Show event on February 15-17. Parking at the Capital Expo Center can accommodate more than 3,000 vehicles. The February 15-17 show hours are Friday 2 to 9 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ticket prices are $9 for adults and $3 for youth ages 6-12. Kids five years and younger are admitted free of charge. The Capital Expo Center is minutes within Route 66. From Route 66, take Route 28 North and turn right onto Willard Road. The Expo Center will be on the left side. For additional information, call the Capital Expo Center at 703-802-0066 or OSEG at 413-467-2171 or via “fax” at 413-467-2174. OSEG can also be reached via email at oseg@javanet.com. Their website is at www.osegsportsmens.com. Some more outdoor fun which takes place inside is coming to Waldorf, Maryland on Saturday, March 2, 2002. That’s when the Maryland State Open Turkey Calling Contest and Owl Hooting Championships is scheduled. For information on how to enter or just attend and enjoy the competition, call Bobby Boarman at 301-259-2830 or Bob Eichler at 473-8104 or 227-2537. © 2002 Steve & Chelly Scala All Rights Reserved. |
